“Tir na Nog” Flower Garden

Welcome to Wild Suburban Homestead! I am a Nature enthusiast and novice homesteader located on the north shore of Long Island, NY. Far from an expert, I am hoping to share my adventures as I learn. I have a few main goals:

  • Become as self-sufficient as possible. This serves several purposes: it reduces spending, reduces waste, and provides me with the highest quality food possible.
  • Give back to Nature by using regenerative or sustainable methods and materials wherever possible.
  • Rewild the land I steward by reducing invasive species and reintroducing native ones.
  • Share with my wild neighbors. Providing for the deer, turkeys, groundhogs, and other critters that live in or visit my yard.
  • Limit spending. Since I rent the property I live on, large-scale renovations are not something I am planning on investing in. If I can avoid spending by using materials available at little or no cost, all the better!

One of the things I love about the Wild Suburban Homestead lifestyle is the challenge. Whenever there is a problem to be solved, I try to think about how it can be solved by working with nature, rather than against it. I have found doing this makes it less likely that my solution will create problems of its own. I also take into consideration how I can use materials that would otherwise be waste rather than buying anything.
